Day 3: Portland, OR

Serving

This morning, my family and I had brunch at Beast.  (I was interested in eating at Beast because a while ago my dad sent me this article about underground supper clubs.  The chef at Beast, Naomi Pomeroy, used to run one out of her house.)  It was a four course prix fixe brunch with no substitutions.  I think the courses went in order from my most favorite, to still pretty good.  The opener was an incredibly rich, smooth ‘Heirloom Apple Clafoutis with Whipped Cream and Maple Glazed Bacon’.  A clafoutis is something between a souffle and a custard and this one had pockets of sweet tender apples buried inside.  The bacon was fantastic due to the glossy sweet layer of syrup baked onto it.  It was certainly my favorite dish of the four.  For pictures and descriptions of the other courses, head over to Flickr.

In the afternoon, we shopped a bit on one of Portland’s many sweet walking streets, then saw Silver Linings Playbook.  I enjoyed it.  I would classify it as a dark romantic comedy.  I especially liked the football elements, even though my Giants are out for the season.  Tomorrow my parents and I head down to California, where I’ll visit some more of my family for a few days.  Can you believe I’m 3/4 of the way through my “blog every day” experiment?
